Prevent and Fight Cancer through Correct Nutrition

Prevent and Fight Cancer through Correct Nutrition

by: Fleur Hupston

(NaturalNews) Preventing cancer starts with lowering the risk of getting cancer in the first place. Plenty of exercise and a healthy diet go without saying, as does avoiding harmful habits such as smoking. Much has been said on Natural News regarding the health benefits of organic vegetables and other whole foods. This article will again highlight the cancer fighting properties of plant foods.

Preventing Cancer Diet

Cancer needs glucose to survive, so avoid a diet high in carbohydrates because carbohydrates turn into glucose. Supplement your diet with a regular intake of vitamin C, lots of small doses throughout the day. If cancer cells are starved of glucose they upgrade the mechanism by which glucose is absorbed into the cells. This mechanism will also absorb the vitamin C, which is toxic to the cancer cells.

Trying to find an inexpensive source of vitamin C and other essential nutrients for a balanced diet can be a challenge if you are feeling the pinch because of the current economic slump. What about growing a vegetable garden? Growing a vegetable garden can be therapeutic in many ways.

Fighting Cancer and Exercise

Getting outdoors for fresh air and exercise is a great way to fight cancer because it helps to reduce blood sugar levels, which reduces insulin levels. Exercise also causes one to sweat, which gets rid of xenobiotic toxins. Why not combine the exercise with the quest for a healthy diet by planting and maintaining a vegetable garden?

The Moringa Tree and the Fight Against Cancer

Consider planting a moringa tree for its nutritional value and potential to fight cancer, especially if you live in a dry, arid area.

Dubbed the "miracle tree" by many, it is said that its cooked leaves have an estimated 17 times the calcium of milk, 10 times the vitamin A of carrots, 15 times the potassium of bananas, 25 times the iron of spinach and 4 times the protein of eggs. In addition to the leaves, the seed pods (drumstick) and other parts of the tree can be eaten as part of a tasty, nutritious dish.

The moringa tree has long been recognized by traditional healers as valuable in the treatment of tumors. Although the scientific research into the effects of the moringa tree on cancer has been limited, there appears to be some evidence in support of the traditional healers' faith in the moringa tree. For example, the journal Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention reported that a dramatic reduction in skin papillomas was demonstrated in a mouse after ingesting a moringa seedpod.

The journal, Planta Medica, which is considered to be one of the leading international journals in the field of medicinal plants and natural products, documented results that shows that niazimicin, a phytochemical found in the Moringa tree, inhibited tumor promotion in a mouse two-stage DMBA-TPA tumor model.

Can the moringa tree prevent cancer in humans? According to researcher Jed W. Fahey, "Neither the prevention of cancer nor the modification of relevant biomarkers of the protected state has been adequately demonstrated in human subjects". However, when commenting on whether the Moringa tree could prevent cancer, he had this to say: "Does this mean that it doesn't work? No. It may well work, but more rigorous study is required in order to achieve a level of proof required for full biomedical endorsement of Moringa as, in this case, a cancer preventative plant".

Will the big drug companies invest money researching a tree that can grow like a weed in your back garden? Hardly! If the claims about the Moringa tree's ability to treat or prevent cancer are true, it could put them out of business.

HEALTH BENEFITS

Moringa Oleifera for Cancer Prevention or Treatment

As we learn more about cancer, we are empowered to use more of the tools which nature has created for us to help battle this terrible disease. The fight against cancer exists on many fronts, encompassing both prevention and treatment methods. In the past we have put all of our faith in pharmaceutical drugs, however these are not the only weapons we have at our disposal to do battle with cancer. Moringa Oleifera is a plant which is known to have many medicinal properties. It is becoming very clear that this natural resource is a helpful ally in a comprehensive treatment of cancer.

Moringa has been shown in studies to have an anti-tumor capacity. Moringa contains benzyl isothiocyanate. There are many studies that have shown this chemical and compounds derived thereof to have anti-cancer and chemoprotective capabilities. This chemoprotective aspect is critical for those who are battling cancer; this helps strengthen cells so that they can tolerate chemotherapy.

Moringa Oleifera has other characteristics which make it a good compliment to a cancer prevention or treatment plan. It contains an enormous amount of nutritional content; Moringa Oleifera contains vitamins, minerals, and amino acids which are critical for good health. It is loaded with calcium, iron, potassium, protein, Vitamin A and C, and many more properties which promote a healthy body that has the tools to fight cancer. Moringa Oleifera has exciting potential as an ally in the war against cancer.

Moringa Oleifera: A treatment for Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder where the human body does not produce or properly uses insulin, a hormone that is required to convert sugar, starches, and other food into energy. Diabetes mellitus is characterized by constant high levels of blood glucose (sugar). Human body has to maintain the blood glucose level at a very narrow range, which is done with insulin and glucagons.

The abnormally high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) resulting from insufficient levels of the hormone insulin which is characteristic symptoms polyuria, polydipsia, glucoseuria, unexplained weight loss, and lethargy. There are two types of diabetes: Type I diabetes known as insulin dependent diabetes and Type II diabetes refer to insulin non dependent diabetes. Diabetes II can be avoided through proper dieting, medication and regular exercise.

Diabetes will lead to complications such as retinopathy, neuropathy, nephropathy, cardiovascular problems etc., researchers recently reported that vitamin D is essential for the islet cells in the pancreas to be able to secrete insulin properly. The studies have shown that individuals with low vitamin D levels experienced the worst blood sugar-handling problems and had a greater risk of developing diabetes. Moringa as a rich source of ascorbic acid helps in insulin secretion. It is interesting to note that certain nutrients like vitamins B1, B2, B12, pantothenic acid, vitamin C, protein and potassium – along with small frequent meals containing some carbohydrate – can actually stimulate production of insulin within the body.

Vitamin A as an antioxidant helps convert beta-carotene efficiently, which reduces the risk of blindness in diabetics. Vitamin B 12 can help people suffering form diabetic neuropathy. High dose supplements of vitamin C have been shown to prevent sorbitol accumulation and glycosylation of proteins, both of which are important factors in the development of diabetic complications such as cataracts. Studies have shown that a low vitamin-E concentration was associated with a 3.9 times greater risk of developing diabetes. Vitamin E reduces oxidative stress, thus improving membrane physical characteristics and related activities in glucose transport. This antioxidant promotes healing of diabetes-related lesions. Magnesium helps in the metabolism of glycogen, Mg works closely with vitamin B 6 to help the metabolic process with in the cell. Moringa has all these nutrients and helps the diabetic patient control their blood glucose level.

Antioxidant Properties To Boost Your Immune System
If you want to stay healthy, you need to feed your body properly. Although it is recommended to eat several servings of fruits and vegetables, the food pyramid is considered by many to be inadequate for individuals who are trying to maintain their optimum health. So we need supplements which will provide the entire essential nutrients needed by our body.

Moringa is recommended as nutrient supplement because it helps digest the food by supplying the minerals for effective digestion. This will help your body to totally absorb all the food nutrients.

The Moringa plant provides a rich and rare combination of zeatin, quercetin, β-sitosterol, caffeoylquinic acid and kaempferol. Moringa Oleifera is very important for its medicinal value. Various parts of this plant such as the leaves, roots, seed, bark, fruit, flowers and immature pods act as cardiac and circulatory stimulants, possess antitumor, antipyretic, antiepileptic, anti-inflammatory, antiulcer, antispasmodic, diuretic, antihypertensive, cholesterol lowering, antioxidant, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, antibacterial and antifungal properties.

Oxidative by-products of normal metabolism cause extensive damage to DNA, protein, and lipid. This damage (the same as that produced by radiation) is a major contributor to aging and to degenerative diseases such as cancer, cardiovascular disease, immune-system decline, brain dysfunction and cataracts.

Research is increasingly showing that those who eat antioxidant-rich foods reap health benefits. Moringa supplements can boost antioxidant levels, Moringa contains 46 antioxidants that helps the cells neutralize the free radicals due to oxidative stress.

Antioxidants are also involved in the prevention of cellular damage — the common pathway for cancer, aging, and a variety of diseases. Athletes have a keen interest because of health concerns and the prospect of enhanced performance and/or recovery from exercise. Increased intake of vitamin E is a protection against exercise induced oxidative damage. Moringa contains Vitamin E that neutralizes these damaging conditions.

Managing Diabetes
There is no cure for diabetes. However, there are several ways to manage the condition in order to keep insulin at the proper level. There are several different techniques and strategies for managing diabetes. Some of them include:

* carefully monitoring one's diet in order to keep blood sugar levels in check;
* using insulin injections as needed to maintain optimal levels in those whose bodies don't produce the hormone;
* keeping a close eye on blood sugar levels by using special kits that measure insulin and sugar in the blood; and
* following an exercise routine in order to keep blood pressure levels in check.

Moringa Oleifera as Treatment for Gout & Arthritis

What is Arthritis

For many centuries Moringa Oleifera was used in traditional medicine, such as the "Ayurveda", as a treatment Arthritis and Gout. It was believed that Moringa Leaf Powder reduce inflammations and pain caused by these conditions.

In 2008 the Faculty of Medicine Health Sciences of the Putra University in Malaysia, published a research aimed to test if Moringa poses any Antinociceptive and Anti-Inflammatory activities, the same activities achieved by the drugs used in modern medicine such as NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs). The research found that the Moringa leaves posses substances that have antinociceptive and anti-inflammatory activitie; in fact they found that it has high quantities of these substances. This means that Moringa Oleifera use in Indian traditional medicine as a treatment for Arthritis and Gout.

The effects of the Moringa is suppressing the COX-2 enzyme. This enzyme is responsible for inflammation processes and pain. Usually the drugs used to suppress this enzyme are NSAID such as Voltaren, Nksin, Adoil, ARCOXIA, Kaspo etc. The side effects of these products include risk for stroke, kidney problems, blood vessels problems, stomach problems and the list goes on.

Elevated Blood Pressure

Blood pressure tends to rise with age. Following a healthy lifestyle helps some people delay or prevent this rise in blood pressure.

Who Is At Risk for High Blood Pressure?

High blood pressure increases your chance (or risk) for getting heart disease and/or kidney disease, and for having a stroke. It is especially dangerous since it often has no warning signs or symptoms. Regardless of race, age, or gender, anyone can develop high blood pressure. It is estimated that one in every four American adults has high blood pressure. Once high blood pressure develops, it usually lasts a lifetime.

High blood pressure can eventually cause blood vessels in the eye to burst or bleed. Vision may become blurred or otherwise impaired and can result in blindness. As people get older, arteries throughout the body “harden,” especially those in the heart, brain, and kidneys. High blood pressure is associated with these “stiffer” arteries. This, in turn, causes the heart and kidneys to work harder. The kidneys act as filters to rid the body of wastes. Over time, high blood pressure can narrow and thicken the blood vessels of the kidneys. The kidneys filter less fluid, and waste builds up in the blood. The kidneys may fail altogether.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart attack. The arteries bring oxygen-carrying blood to the heart muscle. If the heart cannot get enough oxygen, chest pain, also known as “angina,” can occur. If the flow of blood is blocked, a heart attack results. High blood pressure is the number one risk factor for congestive heart failure (CHF). CHF is a serious condition in which the heart is unable to pump enough blood to supply the body’s needs.

The important nutrients needed by a person suffering from high blood pressure are Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium, Zinc, and Vitamin E. Moringa contains these entire nutrient in it. Moringa contains Vitamin C helps support the body’s production of nitric oxide, which is critical to normal functioning of blood vessels. The better your blood vessels work, the lower your risk of hypertension. Calcium is needed for smooth muscle relaxation and contraction; increased consumption can have a direct effect on blood vessels. It’s best to get your calcium from your diet; studies have found that compared with supplements, dietary calcium has twice the benefits for blood pressure.

Potassium content of the Moringa is 15 times more compared to Banana. Potassium acts by increasing sodium excretion in the urine, which helps blood vessels dilate, and changing the interactions of hormones that affect blood pressure.

Diet high in magnesium benefits those with hypertension, most likely by contributing to the relaxation of the smooth muscles of the blood vessels. Moringa also contains magnesium along with zinc and vitamin E which takes part in decreasing the blood pressure along with other nutrients.

Anti-Aging

Moringa Anti-Aging

Aging affects our social environment. Symptoms of old age includes wrinkles and liver spots on the skin, hair loss , lessened hearing , poor eyesight , slower reaction times and agility , reduced ability to think clearly , difficulty recalling memories , greater susceptibility to bone diseases such as osteoarthritis. Elderly people tend to have lower body temperatures and infections that would cause fever. Elderly pneumonia sufferers may present symptoms such as rapid breathing, reduced appetite and reduced functioning. Elderly urinary tract infection sufferers may present symptoms such as incontinence, confusion and may suffer from falls.

Moringa/Malunggay is rich in vitamin to the extent that it is one of the richest plant source of Vitamins. Moringa has Vitamin A (Beta Carotene), Vitamin B1 (Thiamine), Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), Vitamin B3 (Niacin), Vitamin B6 Pyrodixine), Vitamin B7 (Biotin), Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Vitamin D (Cholecalciferol), Vitamin E (Tocopherol) and Vitamin K. Vitamin A is needed to prevent night blindness, promotes healthy skin, and fights infections. Vitamin C is needed to maintain healthy gums, assists in healing wounds, and helps the body use iron. Vitamin E will protect your body against free radical damage to cells. Calcium and Vitamin D are essential to maintain strong bones and teeth.

The list of Minerals present in Moringa is abundant and few of the main minerals include Calcium, Copper, Iron, Potassium, Magnesium, Manganese and Zinc. Calcium is one of the most important minerals for the growth, maintenance, and reproduction of the human body. Blood coagulation, transmission of nerve impulses, muscle contraction and relaxation, normal heart beat, stimulation of hormone secretion, activation of enzyme reactions, as well as other functions, all require small amounts of calcium. After age 50, more calcium or 1,200 milligrams are needed to prevent a disease called osteoporosis. As you age, minerals in your bones are lost and bones may get thinner.

Moringa contains all the essential minerals needed for maintaining strong bones. Good nutrition can help lessen the effects of diseases prevalent among elderly population and improve their quality of life.

Moringa/Malunggay is the richest source of Calcium. Malunggay has 17 times more Calcium than that of milk, helps to prevent the occurrence of osteoporosis during old age and strengthen the bones of the young and middle age people. Moringa, with 25 times more Iron than that of Spinach, helps in the formation of hemoglobin and myoglobin, which carry the oxygen in the blood and the muscle. Iron also makes up part of many proteins and enzymes in the body, deficiency of which leads to the weakening of the immune system, helps in improving the mental ability as the oxygen supply to the brain increases.

Moringa For Lactating Mothers
Moringa For Lactating Mother
A new born baby has only three demands. They warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breast and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breast feeding satisfies all the three.
Breast milk is the natural and complete food for infants. It is safe, inexpensive and provides all nutrients most babies need for the first 6 months of life. Researches have shown that breastfed babies are less like to suffer eczema, food allergy and respiratory illness than formula-fed babies. In the philippines, 85 % of mothers initiated breast feeding soon after delivery but only 22% of these mothers are still exclusively feeding by one month old. Most mothers after initiating expression of breast milk on the first few days postpartum complain of insufficient volume of breast milk. This has prompted mothers to shift their children to bottle feeding and stop breast feeding.

Galactagogues are herbs that promote and establish the flow of mother’s milk. Moringa/Malunggay is one of the most studied herbs in the Philippines. As a galactogogue, several studies confirm its efficacy. However, it is usually promoted to be given 3 days postpartum or after delivery to induce lactation. The lactation enhancing effects of Moringa leaves as evidenced by a greater increase in maternal serum prolactin levels. Prolactin is the most important hormone in the initiation of laction. Moringa/Malunggay capsules are effective galactagogues if given prior to delivery with onset of adequate amount.

Nourishing the world

Dozens of humanitarian organizations now promote the use of Moringa in poverty-stricken areas to combat malnutrition and its adverse effects on the body. Groups such as Church World Service, Educational Concerns for Hunger Organization, National Science Foundation, and others are reintroducing the different health benefits of this fast-growing, drought-resistant plant to malnourished people in various underdeveloped areas. While conventional treatments for malnutrition normally take months, healthcare professionals have discovered that people taking Moringa show improvement within days. One of the more amazing things Moringa is being used for is to prevent childhood blindness, a condition that can develop from vitamin A and retinol deficiencies. Moringa contains sufficient amounts of these nutrients to eliminate this condition.

The word on Moringa is out

Biochemists, natural scientists, and healthcare workers are busy substantiating ancient claims of Moringa's effectiveness in treating more than 300 conditions. Their research has led to the documentation of its astonishing range of natural vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients. Many people taking Moringa have reported rapid improvements in skin, digestion, eyesight, mental clarity, and overall well-being, plus a reduction in symptoms associated with fatigue, arthritic-like conditions, and aging to name a few.

Moringa is a natural, nutritional powerhouse

While it's one of the newer discoveries to modern science, Moringa has been making strides in various societies for thousands of years. Moringa continues to amaze the scientific world with its amazing balance of antioxidants, minerals and amino acids.
Ancient Indian writings, dating as far back as 150 B.C., refer to the Moringa plant and its uses. Early Romans, Greeks, and Egyptians prized Moringa for its therapeutic properties and also used it to protect skin, make perfume, and purify water for drinking.

Moringa - The Complete Healthy Food:

By definition, health foods are foods believed to be highly beneficial to health, especially a food grown organically and free of chemicals.
According to government research, an apple can have as many as 36 different pesticides sprayed on it. Organically grown translates to cleaner water and air due to farming methods that rely on natural pest control.
Having bad health affects not only ourselves, but those we love as well. Organic means healthier environments, healthier communities, and healthier families.
Moringa also gives you Z-Atin, the stimulant- free natural trigger for your metabolism that launches your body into absorption mode.  Moringa has been formulated to provide you with the highest degree of effective absorbability. TheMoringa is organically grown, shade dried and powdered to maintain the maximum nutritive value, and is tested to be pesticide free.  Give your body the nutritional nudge it needs with a healthy food supplement.

The nourishment found in Moringa includes:
  • Active Adults: on-the-go lifestyle. Working 8-10 hours a day and trying to keep up with other activities.
  • Senior Adults: lessened ability to absorb nutrients, lower metabolism, and less energy.
  • Children: hard to get them to eat right even if you cook healthy food for them; they often snub vegetables.
  • Parents: no time to think about their own nutrition; too busy.
  • Teenagers: immortal attitude, don’t think about and don’t care about what fast food does to them; not worried about the future.
  • Athletes: need extra protein and other nutrients for their training regimen.
  • Travelers: fatigue; most meals are fast food.
  • Overweight But Undernourished: even when food is plentiful, it doesn’t always provide proper nutrition.
  • Vegetarians: sometimes it’s hard to get the right kind of protein in the right amounts.
  • Lactating Mothers: Moringa has been shown to increase milk supply.

Genesis 1:29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat. (KJV - Emphasis mine.)

Chlorohyll - One of the phytonutrients in Moringa

Chlorohyll - One of the phytonutrients in Moringa
Chlorophyll, the green pigment of plants, is an alkalinizing compound found in plants that helps offset the acidifying effect of the typical high-fat, high-protein Western diet.   Because chlorophyll is not known to be an essential nutrient, a “deficiency” does not exist. People who do not eat plenty of green foods lack chlorophyll in their diets.

Chlorophyll, often referred  to as “the blood of plants”, is closely related to hemoglobin - the red pigment of red blood cells responsible for oxygen transport in many animals.  The main difference between the two molecules is the metallic element in the center.  In human blood hemoglobin consists of iron, while in chlorophyll, the metallic element is magnesium.  Some people believe that this resemblance helps the chlorophyll to be better absorbed and used to “build up” blood and fight anemia. Some scientists and nutritionists do not believe it is absorbed internally (to reach the blood) but rather that it may act locally to support the health of the mouth, stomach and intestinal tract.

Moringa is one of the very few foods that contain chlorophyll together with so many other nutrients (vitamins, minerals, proteins, beneficial fats), and has a great taste.  Dark green vegetables and herbs like Romaine lettuce, spinach, or parsley are excellent sources of chlorophyll, but they do not provide many of the other nutrients of Moringa.”

Diet and Nutrition
Under-nourishment and over-eating both have harmful consequences on the health of the individual”
Ditta B. Sambou, Belfort State Clinic
Supplementation - No longer a matter of Choice. Diet and nutrition go hand in hand.  A better diet leads to better nutrition, and one important component of better nutrition is supplementation. Why?  The body doesn’t absorb every nutrient consumed, making it nearly impossible to get all the right nutrients all of the time.  What’s the best supplement?  The one that works. Who needs to supplement their diet?  Everyone!  Research has shown that when supplement use increases, the use of prescription drugs goes down. According to the American Medical Association, supplementation is no longer a matter of choice, as people who do not supplement their diets are at higher risk for degenerative diseases; and Dr. John Klippel, president of the Arthritis Foundation, stated “There are lots of choices that people need to make and supplements are one of them.

Without the proper nutrients needed to do their job, our bodies are fighting a losing battle to keep us healthy, the result being sickness and disease.  A hundred years ago people died primarily from infectious diseases such as influenza, pneumonia, and diphtheria.

Today the leading causes of death and disability are heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, arthritis, and other degenerative diseases. In large part this change is due to how we eat (fast foods, over- processed foods),what we eat(partially hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup), and the quality of what we eat. The Center for Disease Control reports that 5 out of every 10 deaths are due to poor diet. The CDC says that  translates to almost 400,000 Americans dying every year due to obesity from poor nutrition or lack of exercise.

Diet and Cancer
The CDC reports that 35% of cancer deaths result from dietary risk factors. A study completed in 2006, by the British arm of EPIC (European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition), which compared the diets of 500,000 people in 10 countries to discover how diet is linked to cancer, showed that diet is second only to tobacco, as a leading cause of cancer, and, along with alcohol, is responsible for nearly a third of cancer cases in developed countries. It also revealed that diabetics have three times the normal risk of developing colorectal cancer, which kills more than 490,000 people worldwide each year.

Getting enough vitamin D and calcium brings a remarkable reduction in cancer risk, a recent 4-year study atCreightonUniversity found.  Women who took the combo reduced their overall risk by up to 77%. According to lead researcher Joan Lappe, PhD, RN, a professor of nursing and medicine, “Vitamin D enhances your body’s immune response — which is the first line of defense against cancer”.

Pain Relief
These natural compounds within the Moringa plant support a healthy, active lifestyle that enhance the body’s ability to relieve pain, inflammation and many other health concerns affecting the body’s various systems.  Moringa’s natural COX-2 inhibitors assist the body to selectively block the COX-2 enzyme, impeding the production of the chemical messengers (prostaglandins) that cause pain and swelling.

Along with these natural COX-2 inhibitors and thanks to Mother Nature’s wisdom,Moringa also provides the body additional documented pain-relieving nutrientsthat include: arginine, beta-sitosterol, calcium, chlorophyll, copper, cystine, omega 3, omega 6, omega 9, fiber, glutathione, histidine, indole acetic acid, isoleucine, leucine, magnesium, oleic-acid, phenylalanine, potassium, rutin, selenium, stigmasterol, sulfur, thiamin, tryptophan, tyrosine, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol, delta-tocopherol, gamma-tocopherol), zeatin, and zinc.  In addition, Moringa’s abundantly bio-active compounds, such as carotenoids, flavonoids and polyphenols have been researched regarding their ability to naturally reduce inflammation, promote joint and bone health and they have been found to be both effective and fast-acting.

This proper nourishment provided by the Moringa plant contributes to a healthy and happy life, especially when complemented by weight management through exercise and diet that also significantly reduces pressure on weight-bearing joints.   According to
Dr. John Klippel, president of the Arthritis Foundation
, “Supplements continue to be an important option for some people. We’re reminding people there are lots of choicesthat people need to make and supplements are one of them.”

Skin Health
A more natural way to support skin health by regenerating new skin cells without the dermabrasion and chemical peels of topical agents is with Cytokinins.  Cytokinins are plant hormones that promote cellular growth and delay the aging process.Cytokinins stimulate cell division, delay the aging and destruction of tissues, protect against cell oxidation, and postpone cell death.  Studies are now showing that the potent, protective, anti-aging effects of Cytokinins work the same way in human skin. When the diet includes these plant nutrients, the body as a whole can fight aging, starting at the cellular level. The most potent Cytokinin is Zeatin.

A study conducted the University of Aarhus, Denmark, in 2004 evaluated the effects of Zeatin on cultured human skin fibroblasts over their life span in lab culture.  The results showed that not only does Zeatin not interfere to with the genetic control of cellular life span of a cell, but that it also helps promote small cell size, a key component to more youthful skin.   Zeatin also helps with the structural and functional integrity of the cell, and prevents accumulation of macromolecular damage in the cell.  The study also found that Zeatin increases the activity of some antioxidant enzymes counteracting the free radical-induced oxidative damage incurred during cell aging. By preventing damage, antioxidants allow your skin to focus on building new collagen and other tasks (such as getting rid of old skin cells) that keep it looking young.

Dr. Monica Marcu, Pharm. PhD, concurs, “Cytokinins have proven to delay biochemical modifications associated with aging in culture human cells.  Zeatin protects the skin. When human skin cells are nourished with Zeatin, they retain their functions longer and are more resistant to environmental stresses.”

Found in most plants, Zeatin is more abundant in one plant than any other, Moringa Oleifera. Moringa Oleifera not only contains thousands of times more Zeatin than any other known plant, it is also the most nutritious plant discovered to date with over 90 nutritional compounds, including 46 antioxidants and 36 anti-inflammatories.

Dr. Lydia Marero, of the Food and Nutrition Research Institute (FNRI), also believes Moringa could be the new anti-aging alternative.   Dr. Marero says, “Because of its high content of vitamins A, C, and E, which are very potent antioxidants, Moringa is a very good quencher of unstable free radicals that can react with the damage of molecules that cause aging”.

Aging of the skin is not the only result of skin damage.  Skin cancer rates and deaths are increasing dramatically around the world.  One in five Americans will develop skin cancer during their lifetime, and one American dies from it every hour.

This may be in part due to ozone depletion which seems to be leaving us more vulnerable to damage from ultraviolet (UV) radiation.  This radiation causes formation of highly reactive “free radicals” within our bodies, damaging our cells in ways that increase the chance for cancer to develop. The best defense against the free radical damage ofoxidation is a diet rich in antioxidant vitamins and minerals (and plenty of water!). Research suggests that certain antioxidants—vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and vitamin A (in the form of beta carotene rich foods)—nourish and protect skin to extend its youthful appearance.  According to Karen Collins, RD, along with sun protection, a healthy diet may help.  She further stated, “In theory, antioxidants like beta-carotene and other carotenoids might stabilize free radicals and end the damaging chain reactions they start.”

Underneath aging and age-related disease is low-grade inflammation, according to dermatologist Nicholas V. Perricone, MD.  He continues, “The skin is always getting inflamed by sun, weather, pollution, and products because it is our interface between the environment and our body.  So the best ways to decrease disease risk and slow the aging process is to take nutrients with powerful anti-inflammatory activity on a regular basis.  Through a three-tier approach involving diet, supplements, and creams, we can control the rate at which we age”.   Combining a good diet with the right dietary supplement will not only help keep your skin healthy, but also looking years younger.

While the skin is the largest system of the body and requires proper nourishment to delay the visible signs of aging, aging isn’t just skin deep.  Every system, that is every cell of the body, ages every minute of every day.  There is no magic fountain of youth.  However, by providing proper nourishment, along with antioxidants with anti-aging compounds at the cellular level, anti-aging of all systems of the body can be slowed; minimizing the visible signs of aging skin and lowering the risk of degenerative (age related) diseases.
